Welcome to Pressure Check Norfolk
Powered by Sentara Health
What is Hypertension?
High blood pressure also known as hypertension is the leading cause of heart disease and stroke. Lowering blood pressure should be easy, yet millions of people have uncontrolled blood pressure. We need new strategies to diagnose and treat hypertension so we can save lives and keep people healthy.
What is the Pressure Check study?
The Pressure Check study looks to determine the most effective care model for blood pressure control. We are partnering with community organizations and businesses, including churches, barbershops, beauty salons, and more to screen for hypertension and connect people with uncontrolled blood pressure into new care delivery models.
Study participants receive a home blood pressure monitor and are placed in one of three groups.

Who is eligible to participate?
What is the timeline of the study?
What does being in the study look like?
Meet with a Pressure Check health advocate at one of our community-based organization (CBO) partners to measure your blood pressure.
Once eligible enrollment takes about 1 hour and we can answer any questions. You’ll receive a free blood pressure cuff, we will teach you how to take your blood pressure at home and you will receive a gift card for your time.
We will set you up with appointments with a care team based on which care group you are placed in.
You will measure your blood pressure at home at least three times a week for six months.
At your 6, 12, and 18 month visits you will meet with the study team to check in on your blood pressure and you will receive a gift card at each check in.
What are my responsibilities?
Daily monitoring: measure your BP twice a day in the morning and at night.
Follow-up visits: attend your appointments with your care team on time, every time. For the first 3 months, we will meet every 2 weeks, and then monthly after that until you reach 6 months.
Equipment return: keep the blood pressure cuff, but return all the other study materials at your final 6 month appointment.
